Therapy is different for everyone. Therapy will help you to clearly address feelings and emotions that create issues in our everyday life. Therapeutic counseling helps you to deal with positive and negative aspects that we perceive in the world around us.
The first meeting is a discussion about you and your reasons for seeking counseling help. You will be asked numerous questions about your situation, thoughts, and feelings. This session, called an “Assessment”, usually lasts about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. From this assessment a therapy, or treatment plan, is agreed upon and established.

Therapy and mental health counseling help individuals uncover their strengths and develop the skills needed to deal with the challenges that life creates. We live in a fast-paced society where, for better or worse, massive amounts information is at our fingertips. Therapy can give us the emotional tools to process this information productively and sort out what is important and what is not. The amount of information is important and how we react to this information, positively or negatively, is also important.

This depends on each individual and their openness to address their feelings and emotions. Some people find positive relief in the first counseling session, while with others, it may be a series of small constructive steps to reach the desired positive outcome. Depending on the client’s issue, group counseling can be effective as others may have similar emotions and feelings that tend to make the individual feel isolated.

Traumatic events happen in life and are processed differently by everyone. Some people are able to work through these events on their own, while others need help or develop PTSD. At Betterment Mental Health, we use EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy as well as CBT- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat these disorders. Both treatments are used to relieve mental stress and emotional pain and help you move forward, beyond the traumatic events, to live a positive and productive life.
